Jem’s funeral

Yesterday was Jem Marsh’s funeral, down at Bradford-on-Avon. It was a sad day of course,  but also a great celebration of his life & achievements. I took the day off & set off from Manchester about 0645 hours, aiming to meet up at 1130 hours in Frome with a few other owners who were bringing their cars along too. Jem’s wife Lynn had asked if we would join the funeral cortege & give Jem a suitably noisy send off through BoA. Trip there & back was faultless from the car, however driver error meaning I over shot the turnoff on the M4 (too busy enjoying the music to hear the SatNav ) so the last 15 miles were definitely the scenic route… Anyway I made it with half an hour to spare & had only been beaten to the pub car park meet point by Jay in his fantastic fliptone converted Mantis Challenge car. We were joined by another six Marcos cars of various eras,  & had a good chat before jumping into the driving seats to await the passing of the hearse & family car.

This was a bit premature & we had relaxed again (& immobilisers had timed in 😅) when the funeral cars suddenly arrived around the bend in road!

An old school Le Mans style start ensued & I ended up immediately behind the family car, leading the Marcos convoy. I have to say that I’m very proud to have done this – a great honour & privilege. We wended our way through the lanes & into BoA, miraculously keeping all the cars together despite various junctions & traffic lights. Other drivers were very considerate, & we made our way through several single lane pinch points in the town without having to stop, before pulling up away from the houses into the final furlong. The cars carrying the family & Jem turned into the cemetery,  leaving the Marcos cars peeling away to head back into BoA where we parked up before descending on a handy pub for non-alcholic refreshment.

At 1400 we walked round to Holy Trinity Church which was packed out. An amazing setting by the river, with perfect blue sky & some unexpected spring warmth from the sun. The service itself was lovely with very affectionate & often amusing takes on Jem’s life. Afterwards we walked back to the the station car park to jump in the cars and drive up to the golf club for nibbles & a last catch up before we went our separate ways.
I got back about 2100 having recorded a couple of 20+ mpg figures (comparing favourably to 12 mpg this week when commuting! 😰). A long day but well worth the trip. No car trouble but best of all fantastic to see a lot of other Marcos owners & reminisce a little about Jem. He & his cars have made our lives all the more interesting. RIP Jem Marsh.

Priorities

The Mantis is taking a back seat as family matters take priority ATM. Currently outstanding are the two press studs on body where the rivets have pulled out, and the voltage stabiliser. I don’t have the tools to do the riveting so that is a garage job (although getting some kind of reinforcement to rivet into on the stud to the left of the Nearside headrest will be challenging!). Having posted on the Marcos Forum about the voltage stabiliser I have bought a solid state one off eBay & that again will need wiring in by someone with more time than me.

Other things to be done of course include an LS engine conversion, a respray & a new interior…

Hitting the Redline

A somewhat postponed trip down to Redline Sports Cars today. Left Manchester an hour behind schedule & in the rain (as forecast, to be fair) but as I expect to be without the car for a good three weeks the hood was down… didn’t get too wet! The sun was starting to show by Birmingham & by the time I was half way down the M5 it it was lovely. It’s always a pleasure driving into Wiltshire.

I made it to Redline with only one ‘practice’ circuit of the site required, before I parked my male ego & looked at the site map. Good to see Jeremy & later Joe. Had a quick look over the car & talked through the job list before leaving it with them. The two major items are the new hood (I have lived with Selotape over the growing split in the vinyl rear screen for three years so I can’t be accused of rushing this one!), & chassis checkup/Waxoyl. I now know from the Marcos Forum that there are 13 bungs in the chassis (to be removed when Waxoyling properly) – just the sort of essential information that will get me invited to wild, crazy swinging parties I reckon… Anyway there also the minor jobs including;

  • Replacement electric aerial
  • Suspension check (ride seems harder than last year, after a few potholes!)
  • Water ingress through windscreen jets
  • … the windscreen jets!
  • Oily fumes coming in through windscreen vents
  • Waterproofing door cards (water seeped around door speakers a few weeks ago, but does not seem to have damaged speakers themselves)
  • Air director thingy (i.e. windscreen/footwell/split)
  • LED bulbs to gauges (I need to check these out more, as SMD bulbs appear to be the way to go, rather than unidirectional ultra bright LEDs). Do I go for blue or white ones though?!
  • Secure offside dashboard (been on & off so many times I don’t think there’s anything left for the screw to bite into).

Jeremy has suggested the chap making the new hood will tweak the flaps at the front to make them a bit more effective, which sounds very promising. Not as good as the later hood frame & cover with all the metal plates & acres of rubber & velcro (that will disappoint some people on Google), but that was £££ when I spoke to MHS. And let’s face it the hood is not up much anyway, rain or shine. I also got to see a half-built Invicta that Joe is finishing off. It’s a fab Mercedes blue, & looks very imposing (2m wide!). Hope I see it again when it’s finished.

The car is still doing about 13mpg (Waaaaah!) & the conversation drifted onto ECUs, & Joe has left me to ponder a Unichip (as chosen by the factory) or I have been recommended Omex. Neither of which are cheap but in the medium term would pay for themselves if they take the mpg into the high teems or low twenties. Now… where’s that lottery ticket?

Alternator Ulster

Alternator light has been flickering away last couple of days. Yet another area of the car that I know bugger all about. Have found a high output version in the States but no idea if I actually need a new one or if it’s battery not even a loose cable. Not ideal but at least I can still drive &  weather is truely awesome 😎

Summer must be here… off to Tatton Park

Another 10+ turnout for the first of this year’s car shows at Tatton Park in Cheshire, my local show & one I’m always happy to support. It didn’t rain but no-one needed the Factor 50 either. The stand was next to the Triumph Stags, and away from the treeline in a more central spot this year which was welcome as more people come past. The Mantis scrubbed up well but as in previous years it was very hard to compete with some of the older cars that have been restored & polished to a lovely sheen. With the Mantis in regular use it’s never going to be a concours winner but it still draws the eye. In my entirely objective opinion. Oh yes. Er… right let’s move on to some pictures.

Salt Lake City

Well as the family are elsewhere this Easter & the weather is dry (but cold!), I thought I ought to go out in the Marcos. I don’t get to drive it for fun anything like as much as I used to, so grabbed the car keys & headed out to… Well, hadn’t actually decided when I left Alty but found myself heading out to Macclesfield, so it made sense to head up to the Cat & Fiddle over the A41. Beautiful day, lots of sunshine & snow. Snow?! Yup I hadn’t bargained for the snow either side of all the roads in the Peaks, & therefore a lot of salt on the road still. Decided to ignore it & enjoy the drive however. Enjoyed a pint by the fire at the C&F, had a chat to some bikers (even colder than me! Nutters!) then decided to go & see a chum of mine in Glossop, so went via Buxton. Such a great drive on the A41 but riddled with average speed cameras now, so hard to relax (I will be keeping an eye on the post for the next few weeks…). Mantis was behaving itself immaculately & I arrived in Glossop all too soon. The ploughed snow made all the roads about two feet narrower so overtaking was ‘interesting’ mind you! Anyway, while catching up with my chum Gary we worked out that a friend of his (‘PJ’ on the Marcos Forum) is the chap who bought the green Mantis with the gold wheels that was down at Redline when my car was having the engine furtled with. It looked fab so it will be interesting to hear how Pual has found owning it – hope he is getting as much out of owning a Mantis as I do! Will find out at Tatton Park as he’s coming along. Anyway, drive back in the dark, hood down & lots of nice wintery smells to spice up the journey. Car was covered in salt (sob!) so I hosed it down as best I could but conscious it’s the chassis that is most at risk so in Waxoyl we trust. A great day driving for driving’s sake.

I love my commute!

Bah! Still no takers for the CARFEST North show & I can’t attend myself. I get the impression our glorious leader at CMI is (understandably) a bit miffed at the underwhelming response. You wouldn’t think Marcos owners were the most obvious shy types!

On the bright side it looks like at least one Marcos is going to be exhibiting at the Passion for Power show in Manchester’s Event City. Well done to Mr Barlow says I! Flying the Marcos flag in the North.

School runs & commute in the Mantis today. Glorious. Glorious. Glorious. Fine weather & all running well on the car. I have succumbed to contacting the car detailer to see what can be done with the Mantis prior to Jem’s birthday bash & of course, with a view to staying shiny through both Tatton Park shows & the odd annual rally! Time to get that kidney on eBay…

Improving the mpg

A slightly poorly Marcos at the moment… but think of the reduced fuel costs! It won’t be too many years before the owner needs a similar level of assistance getting around.

Tatton Park

It’s… time for Tatton! Yes yes, August is here & that means getting the band back together to create a Marcos Stand at The 24th Classic, Vintage & Sports Car Show at the ever lovely (but let’s be honest, sometimes rather moist) Tatton Park. As it was, the weather was pretty decent, as was the turnout with a nice range of different models (that is, the cars not owners). The usual suspects were present & the reward for having given the car a quick wipe down was plenty of footfall past the stand. Chris Message’s purple Mantis always gets a lot of attention as does Howard Plant’s lovely Mini-Marcos (conveniently parked next to each other, no less!).

The trees provided some welcome shade in the end.

Chris & Angie discuss how much better the green car is than the purple one. Probably.

Our next door neighbours were an excellent rock ‘n roll band!
